Give
more than beans, get more than gas – that’s the theme
of the 2nd Annual Tacos for Trey fundraiser, being held on May
3 at Lynn Valley Elementary School. This fundraising fiesta offers
entertainment for the whole family, with all of the proceeds going
to the MPS II research fund.
While the
kids enjoy live entertainment, two bouncy castles, craft tables
and face painting; parents can peruse the silent auction - which
boasts items like Canucks club seats, West Jet Flight Vouchers
and spa packages. Bobs and Lolo (bobsandlolo.com),
the fantastic local kids performing duo will be doing a concert
at the event!
Tacos for
Trey is the work of a dedicated family who persevered when their
baby boy, Trey, was diagnosed with a rare, degenerative and terminal
difference called MPS II. Great hurdles have been overcome and
Trey is now celebrating his first year of Enzyme Replacement Therapy
(ERT), which is slowing the progression of his difference.
But ERT is
treatment, not a cure. And the Purcell’s aren’t giving
up. Last year they hosted the first “Taco’s for Trey”
fundraiser out of their home and raised over $30,000 - with all
of the proceeds going directly to gene therapy research in MPS
II at McMaster University. This year the event has grown, and
they hope to surpass this goal.
If you are
unable to attend the event, please consider giving a donation
to the MPS II Fund. There is a lot of very exciting research going
on and we believe that a cure will be found for MPS II in Trey’s
lifetime. You can make a financial contribution by filling out
the attached donation form and sending it to the MPS Society by
mail, email or fax. You can also call Kirsten at the MPS Society
to donate over the phone (604-924-5130) or donate online at: www.mpssociety.ca.
If you would like to donate specifically to the MPS II Research
Fund, please specify that on the phone, online, or in your cheque.

Rhododendron Festival in Deer Lake Park. This unique “green”
community festival produced by the City of Burnaby and the Burnaby
Rhododendron and Gardens Society features a blend of horticulture
and art in the heart of Deer Lake Park. Highlights include free
horticultural workshops, specialty products for the avid gardener,
commercial plant sales, handmade pottery sales, a silent auction
and hands-on activities and entertainment. Guest speaker Carolyn
Herriot of Global TVs “Get Up and Grow” will generate
a great deal of interest as she discusses food gardening for the
future. You can even adopt your own rhododendron seedling and
learn all about it’s care and nurturing at the Rhododendron
Culture and Adopt-a-Rhodo Workshop.
Other festival
highlights:
A special
early bird tour with naturalist George Clulow will reveal the
“Bird Life of Deer Lake Park”. Please call 604-205-3003
to pre-register.
Zox of the Forest and the Canadian Mother Goose will
amuse all ages as they rove throughout the festival site.
Bluegrass, swing, classical and country music will fill the air.
Children of all ages take pride as they fly their hand made kites
high in the sky over Deer Lake Park.
The Mad Science organization will spark imaginative learning as
children create their own slime and learn some cool science. There’s
something for everyone at this event so bring the entire family!

acclaimed family entertainer Rob Kapilow along with the Vancouver
Family Musik Orchestra, a chamber chorus, and two professional
dancers for some whirling, twirling, blustery good fun–rain

MOTHERS
DAY TEA ON A 1921 RAILCAR
The Port Moody
Station Museum will once again be hosting their Annual Mothers
Day Tea. Always a successful and delightful afternoon, we invite
all mothers to visit us and enjoy a cup of tea and bakery treats
aboard our Vintage 1921 Venosta Railcar.
Moms have
been celebrated throughout time of course, and in recorded events
in Egyptian, Greek and Roman times. The origins of a specific
Mother's Day go all the way back to the 16th century and the practice
of visiting one's "mother church" once a year. It was
not until 1914 that North America recognized the first national
Mother's Day to honour mothers whose sons had died in war. In
some areas it is traditional to wait until Mothers Day to plant
tomatoes.
"With
this in mind," Jim Millar, Manager/Curator says, "We
will be presenting a young tomato plant to the first thirty or
so moms who enjoy tea on the train." Jim continues, "Mothers
Day here at the Museum is a very special occasion and we see many
of the same families year after year. Its warm, relaxing and a
great experience for the whole family."
With fresh
spring flowers and light entertainment, this Mothers Day will
be a special one. Have tea and visit the new displays at the Port
Moody Station Museum, all for only $5.00 per person.
The Port Moody
Station Museum is located at 3734 Murray Street in Port Moody
next to Rocky Point Park. The Museum is owned and operated by
the non-profit Port Moody Heritage Society and as part of their
mandate is to promote increased awareness and knowledge of Port
Moody's rich heritage and history.

Farmers Market
season is here again! The Coquitlam Farmers Market opens its 12th
season in the Tri Cities community on Sunday May 11th. Join us
from 9am – 1pm in the parking lot of Dogwood Pavilion (624
Poirier St.) for a day of kids’ activities and crafts and
a special gift for Mom. What a great way to spend Mother’s
Day! Kids can also participate in our Young Gardeners Planting
project for one last round of planting. The YGPP encourages kids
to grow their own flower or vegetable (planted at the market)
and create a journal about their experience. Later in the season
all participants will be invited back to the market to showcase
what they grew!
The Coquitlam
Farmers Market is open every Sunday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, from
